There are an endless amounts of behaviors to teach a puppy or dog. These four behaviors are a great start in that direction. These can teach your puppy or dog to sit still and have self control. These are some of the fundamental behaviors every puppy needs in order to be a good canine citizen in a human household. Once your puppy knows these behaviors your relationship will be much happier. You won't have to say "no" as often because you will simply be able to tell them what you want them to do.

SIT ON CUE
We love teaching sit which is why we also teach the automatic sit in this course. If they are sitting they aren't jumping, or many other annoying behaviors.
We see sit as a dog being polite and saying please. When you dog wants to go our the door, instead of being pushy they are sitting politely and waiting for the door to be opened. When they are greeting people they are sitting instead of jumping.
LIE DOWN WHEN ASKED
Down is a continuation of sit but it's also a great relaxation and resting position. If your dog is able to able lie down on cue then they are on their way to be taught how to relax on cue. Who doesn't want to be able to tell their dog to lie down when they are driving you crazy or you are enjoying your time at a local patio outside.
COMING WHEN CALLED
Coming when called is an extremely important behavior for your puppy to learn. This could ultimately save your puppy or dogs life some day. Having a strong recall not only it a safety behavior but it is also what gives your dog more freedom.
If you have a dog that has a reliable recall then they can be given the freedom to to off leash at certain places. They can explore and have the time of their life. If your dog does not come when called then their destiny is to be on leash while out of the home.
DROP ITEMS OUT OF THEIR MOUTH
Is your puppy putting everything in their mouth? Are you constantly chasing them around trying to get the precious item out of their mouth? Drop it is the best way to get them to willingly release things. By teaching drop it, you are also one step ahead of warding off resource guarding in the future.
Puppies and dogs explore the world through their mouth so there is no surprise they pick everything up. It is our job to teach them what they can and cannot pick up and that is it a positive outcome when they willingly give items up.
